Toyota Rav4 The 1999 Toyota RAV4 is a compact sport utility vehicle that is available as either a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive model. The RAV4 is available as a two door soft top, four door hard top or as a four door hard top with an optional L Special Addition package. For Toyota the RAV4 is the sixth best selling model in their lineup with total sales of 64.990 vehicles sold in the United States for 1998. As a sport utility vehicle the RAV4 competes in a crowded market segment that includes such competitors as the Jeep Cherokee, Chevrolet Blazer, Isuzu Amigo, Honda CRV and Kia Sportage. Toyota markets the RAV4 as a sport utility that offers car-like comfort and ride with cargo-carrying ability. Even the fuel consumption is respectable with a 23-26 mpg combined fuel economy rating depending on whether it's two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Pricing begins at around $15,700 for the two door soft top and ranges up to around $17,800 for the four door hard top with four-wheel drive. Debuting in 1996, the RAV4 continues to offers consumers a smaller sport utility vehicle that can handle off-road travel, haul fair amounts of cargo (57.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down in the 4-door model) and still achieve a comfortable car like ride. The 4-wheel independent suspension and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system are the keys to the smooth responsive handling found in the RAV4. It is powered by a 2.0L I4 that produces 127-hp and comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive or is available with an optional 4-speed electronically (ECT) controlled automatic transmission. For an open-air feel the 2-door RAV4 has a vinyl top over the rear passenger area that is completely retractable. The sunroof and vinyl side and rear windows are also removable. For 1999 the RAV4 is basically unchanged. New available options for the four door models are leather-trimmed seats, color-keyed mirrors and door handles, and body-colored body side cladding. A tilt steering wheel is now standard on the two door models.
